Playing Dolby Digital, Dolby HD, and DTS HD Audio on the Debut ConneX DCB61
The DCB61 supports Dolby Digital decoding via HDMI ARC and Optical inputs. For high-definition formats (like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD) ensure source devices output PCM.
The Debut ConneX DCB61 supports a variety of audio formats through multiple digital input options. This article outlines supported formats and how to get the best playback experience from sources such as TVs and Blu-ray players using Dolby Digital codecs.
The DCB61 is certified to decode 2-channel Dolby Digital audio. Supported input methods for Dolby Digital include:
-
HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) - Recommended
-
Optical (S/PDIF)
The system is compatible with the following features:
-
Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1 decoding
-
2-channel and 5-channel PCM over HDMI
-
Bitstream passthrough
-
Dynamic Range Compression
-
Dialogue Normalization
-
Downmixing of 5.1 content (Lt/Rt recommended)
TV Audio Output Compatibility
When connected via HDMI ARC or Optical, the DCB61 can decode Dolby Digital content directly. Many streaming services, such as Netflix and Disney+, natively use Dolby Digital, making them compatible out of the box.
Modern TVs typically output audio as PCM (the already decoded audio signal), or a bitstream (a digital signal prior to decoding), which is sent to the audio device to be decoded (AV Receiver, Soundbar, ConneX Speakers, etc.).
To take advantage of Dolby Digital decoding, we recommend selecting bitstream output in your TV’s audio settings when available.
Note:
If your TV is set to output PCM, that is also supported by the DCB61. However, this will rely on your TV to decode the signal—which may or may or may not be of higher quality.
Dolby HD and DTS HD Playback from Blu-ray Discs
The DCB61 does not natively decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio formats. These advanced formats are typically downmixed or converted by the Blu-ray player or TV to a compatible output, such as standard Dolby Digital or PCM, which the DCB61 can handle.
For best results playing Dolby HD and DTS HD:
-
Ensure your Blu-ray player is set to output audio as either Dolby Digital or PCM, rather than raw Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD.
-
Connect the Blu-ray player to the TV via HDMI, and then route audio to the DCB61 via ARC or Optical.
-
Verify the TV is set to pass through Dolby Digital when available.
